In this lesson, you will write and run your first Elm program! I’ll be using IntelliJ for this demo but you can feel free to use any other IDE.<\/p>\n

We would cover the following<\/p>\n

  1. Your First Elm Program – Hello World<\/a><\/li>\n
  2. Your Second Elm Program – Init, View, Update<\/a><\/li>\n
  3. Generating the JavaScript File<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

     <\/p>\n

    1. Your First Elm Program – Hello World<\/strong><\/h4>\n

    Follow the steps below:<\/p>\n

    Step 1<\/strong> – Open IntelliJ and create a new\u00a0 Elm Project. Make sure to choose Elm from the list as shown below:<\/p>\n

    You will notice that a new project is created and the Main.elm file opens up with the following content:<\/p>\n

    module<\/span> Main<\/span> exposing (main)\r\n\r\nimport<\/span> Html<\/span> exposing (text)\r\n\r\nmain<\/span> =<\/span> text \"hi\"<\/span>\r\n<\/pre>\n
     <\/p>\n
    Step 2<\/strong> – Replace the “hi” text with “Hello World from Elm!”<\/p>\n
    Step 3<\/strong> – Open the terminal window and navigate into the src directory (use the command cd src). Then enter the following command to compile the project<\/p>\n
    elm make Main.elm\r\n<\/pre>\n
    This command will yield the following output:<\/p>\n
    Dependencies ready!         \r\nSuccess! Compiled 1 module.\r\n\r\n    Main \u2500\u2500\u2500> index.html\r\n<\/pre>\n
    At this point, you will notice the an index.html file is created in\u00a0 the same directory as the Main.elm file.<\/p>\n
    Step 4<\/strong> – Open the file location in your file system and open the index.html page on a browser. You will see the text “Hello World from Elm!”<\/p>\n
    Congrats! You have successfully written and compiled your first Elm program<\/p>\n
     <\/p>\n
    Elm Reactor<\/strong><\/p>\n
    This is an interactive development tool available in Elm that help you see the output of your program in a browser. To start Elm reactor, just enter the command:<\/p>\n
    elm reactor\r\n<\/pre>\n
    This command would give the following output:<\/p>\n
    <\/p>\n
    Go to http:\/\/localhost:8000<\/span> to see your project dashboard.<\/span>\r\n<\/pre>\n
    You can now visit the link and browse through the file and the html page.<\/p>\n
     <\/p>\n
    2. Your Second Program – Init, View, Update<\/strong><\/h4>\n
    Now I would like you to write the following code replacing the existing content of the Main program.<\/p>\n
    module<\/span> Main<\/span> exposing (..<\/span>)\r\n\r\nimport<\/span> Browser<\/span>\r\nimport<\/span> Html<\/span> exposing (div, text)\r\n\r\nadd<\/span> a b =<\/span> a +<\/span> b\r\ninit<\/span> =<\/span>\r\n    { value =<\/span> 0<\/span>}\r\n\r\nview<\/span> model =<\/span>\r\n    div []<\/span> [text \"Your Second Elm Program\"<\/span>]\r\n\r\nupdate<\/span> model =<\/span>\r\n    model\r\n\r\nmain<\/span> =<\/span>\r\n    Browser<\/span>.<\/span>sandbox\r\n        {\r\n            init =<\/span> init,\r\n            view =<\/span> view,\r\n            update =<\/span> update\r\n        }\r\n<\/pre>\n
    As before, you can use make command to compile the program. You can also use the elm reactor command to start the web server<\/p>\n
     <\/p>\n
    3. Generating the JavaScript Code<\/strong><\/h4>\n
    Actually, your Elm program compiles to generate a JavaScript code. To view this code, you can specify an output parameter with the make command using the command below:<\/p>\n
    elm make Main.elm --output output.js\r\n<\/pre>\n
    If this command executes successfully, you will see the file output.js in the same directory as the Main.elm file.<\/p>\n
